They were due to come in July, but the day before they were to set out on the road trip they were in lockdown and the Minecraft camps that were to be a first-time event for Young were on hold.

Well, the lockdown has been lifted and the curfew removed and they are heading to Young, Canowindra and Cowra in December.

They will hit Young on December 4. Due to the reschedule, there are still a few places left for anyone wishing to purchase a spot for their child.

Hosting the event is Noelene Callaghan of World of Minecraft who said she was looking forward to visiting our region after having to postpone the original trip due to lockdown.

“I had to ring parents because so many people had bought the camp as gifts for their kids,” Ms Callaghan said.

“We have a whole day of coding competitions. It’s something that’s never been done in Young before.”

When nearby Canowindra and Cowra heard about the camps, they contacted World of Minecraft and asked to be included, so Ms Callaghan arranged a road trip.

“I’m a high school teacher and I’ve been using Minecraft in the classroom for a long time,” Ms Callaghan said.

“I was using the original version in class before they were even using the current version in schools.”

“I had a lot of students with a first language that was not English.”

Ms Callaghan found that using Minecraft was something that all of the children could understand, regardless of their native tongue.

With schools out of action for much of this year, Ms Callaghan decided to put her 10 years Minecraft experience to good use and launch her own business during the pandemic. She now runs two programs and a club.

“I run a class each week with a challenge each week,” she said. “I moved online during the lockdown.”
