The 2018 Hilltops Wine Show results culminated on Saturday 22 September with a public tasting and Trophy presentation at the Young Town Hall. The successful event attracted a good crowd of visitors and locals impressed by the diverse array of high-quality Hilltops wines.
Calabria Family Wines received the major award – the prestigious PETER ROBERTSON TROPHY for the “Hilltops Wine of the Year”. The Calabria 2016 ‘Cool Climate’ Shiraz also won the Trophy for the BEST SHIRAZ. The grapes for this wine were entirely sourced from the Freeman Altura Vineyard in
Indeed, the Hilltops Wine Show proved most rewarding for winemaker and grape grower, Brian Freeman, who collected three Trophies. Freeman 2013 Dolcino (Viognier) won the Trophy for the BEST WHITE WINE, while Freeman Prosecco 2017 won the Trophy for BEST SPARKLING WINE. Freeman Vineyards was also recognised at the MOST SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITOR.
The Shiraz Class was especially strong attracting a total of three Gold medals, two
of which were awarded to Gundog 2017 No. 1 Shiraz and McWilliam’s 2015 Single
McWilliam’s received a total of eight medals: two Gold, two Silver and four Bronze. Harry Kinsman, McWillliam’s winemaker responsible for the Hilltops wines, presented the Peter Robertson Trophy.
Moppity Vineyards won eight medals including a Gold and the Trophy for BEST CABERNET SAUVIGNON for the Moppity 2016 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Ballinaclash 2017 Thomas Cabernet Sauvignon also won a Gold Medal.
In total, 80 wines were entered in the Hilltops Wine Show from 18 different wineries that use grapes grown in the Hilltops wine region to produce their wine. A total of 45 medals were awarded (almost 58% of wines judged) with 13 wine producers represented in the medal tally. These wines were judged as part of the NSW Regional Wine Show conducted by the Riverina Winemakers Association. The chief judge of the Hilltops Wine Show 2018 was Melbourne based sommelier and wine judge, Gabrielle Poy.
