Government Committed To Reducing Young Driver Deaths

The Nationals Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack is urging young drivers and their parents in the Riverina and Central West to take advantage of the free safe-driving program, keys2drive.

The Federal Government recently approved an additional $16 million to extend the keys2drive program for a further four years following a commitment in the 2017 Budget.

The program aims to reduce road trauma, particularly in regional areas. Mr McCormack said he understood the perils of driving on regional roads as he spent many hours on the road driving to engagements across the electorate.

“I urge and encourage young drivers to take part in this wonderful initiative from the Liberals and Nationals’ Government,” Mr McCormack said. “We are committed to reducing the number of road deaths among drivers. Obviously, the ultimate aim is to have a road network with zero deaths and injuries.  The numbers prove we are getting the job done. In 2006, there were 17 per 100,000 young driver deaths compared to nine per 100,000 in 2016.”

With 66 per cent of road trauma in regional areas, the extension of the keys2drive includes an increased distribution of keys2drive lessons to regional areas. A large number of licensed instructors are available across the Riverina and Central West. For a full list, go to

The program provides learner drivers and their supervisors with a free 30-minute theory lesson as well as a free 30-minute practical lesson.

The contract signing will see the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) continue to deliver keys2drive, which has been running for nearly a decade. In line with our commitment to reduce the number of serious road crashes, the Australian Government has so far provided $31 million to support keys2drive, with further funding bringing this total to $47 million.
