Looking After Yourself This Holiday Season

Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy and happiness when family and friends come together to catch up and relax, but for many it’s the most difficult time of the year.

For people experiencing mental ill health and substance use issues, this time of year can make people feel worse, according to Murrumbidgee Local Health District’s (MLHD) Drug & Alcohol Clinical Nurse Consultant Martina Greenaway.

In the spirit of the 12 Days of Christmas, MLHD provides the following Christmas tips:

1. Stick to your budget

2. Set boundaries

3. Don’t shop ‘til you drop – avoid the crowds and added stress

4. Avoid the pressure cooker feeling of stress building up, share the load with your friends

5. Manage your expectations – Christmas is ‘one day’, prepare and plan ahead

6. Everything in moderation

7. Get out and about – continue your regular exercise regime

8. Don’t overdo it – take time out to rest and relax

9. Don’t be a stranger: keep in contact with close friends and reach out if you feel a bit down or need help

10. Reflect on the year just gone and look forward to the New Year

11. Pay it forward (volunteer for others) and

12. Remember you’re not alone – when in crisis contact;
