Mateship And Mental Health Event Huge Success

Emma Whitechurch (Secretary of Hilltops Suicide Prevention Network and Community Engagement Officer for Young Medicare Mental Health Centre), Rhys Cummins (Founder of Murrumbidgee Men’s Group), Janine Hobson (Chair of the event), Boyd Cordner (Former NRL Captain), Edwina Planten (Local clinical psychologist) and Eris Gleeson (President of Hilltops Suicide Prevention Network).
The free mateship and mental health evening with Boyd Cordner held in Young recently was a huge success.
The event was hosted by the Hilltops Suicide Prevention Network in partnership with Young Medicare Mental Health Centre at the Young Services Club.
Speakers included former NRL captain Boyd Cordner, founder of Murrumbidgee Men’s Group Rhys Cummins and local clinical psychologist Edwina Planten.
Emma Whitechurch, Secretary of Hilltops Suicide Prevention Network and Community Engagement Officer for Young Medicare Mental Health Centre said the mental health event was a great success.
“Boyd talked about his own journey – retiring early from the ongoing affects of concussions, his experience with mental health – both his own lived experience, and supporting those around him through theirs.”
“Edwina provided details around how to look after our own mental wellbeing and then what to look out for in your friends and family that may indicate that they are struggling, and Rhys delivered important messages about how it felt to speak to his loved ones when he was at his lowest and engaging with services for support.”
“Between the three a really well-rounded message was delivered to the audience around mental health and breaking down the stigma attached to it.”
“The feedback I have received about the event has been fantastic with those that attended taking a lot from the evening, how great the speakers were, how well the topics they each covered complimented each other, and how they feel they are messages a lot more people need to hear. Lots of people took resources that were provided.”
“For any further enquiries anyone can contact me at ewhitechurch@gph.org.au And support is available for anyone at Young Medicare Mental Health Centre at 147A Boorowa Street, Young,” said Emma.
The event aimed to strengthen conversations around mental health, resilience, and the power of mateship.
