Lawn Bowls

After a period where there was little play at the Young Bowling Club due to COVID restrictions, it was good to see many of our players on the green during the week.

Despite the amount of rain that has fallen during the past few weeks, the greens are in good condition and all the players are appreciative of Damien’s work in this regard.

The conditions for Thursday afternoon were very pleasant and there were 24 men and 12 women playing in separate games.

There were some big margins in the men’s games.

The vouchers for the day went to Phil Taylor and Tony Ruhl who won their game by 21 shots.

Other winners with big margins were – Brian Christie and Geoff Holt – 19 shots, Milan Brankovic and Bob Ruhl – 16 shots and Albert Carter and Les Fanning – 13 shots.

Two games saw close finishes with Aldo Malvicino and Harold Anderson winning their game by 5 shots and Terry Holmes and John Cooper having a 1 shot margin.

It was quite warm on Saturday afternoon and there were 32 players involved in Jackpot Bowls.

There was also a social group at the Club enjoying an afternoon of bowls.

It was good to see that the results for the games on Saturday were mostly much closer than they had been on Thursday.

The highest winning margin for the day was 14 shots for Brian Gibson and Tom Preston.

They finished just in front of Colin Stokell and Joe Bargwanna who won their game by 12 shots.

All of the other games had margins in single figures with Ged Hardman and Tony Ruhl winning by 8 shots, Scott Douglas and Colin Powell winning by 3 shots and Andrew Hutchison and Peter Watts winning by 1 shot.

The other three games all had a margin of 5 shots and were won by Albert Carter and Damien Miller, Brian Christie and Mark Brownlie, and Steve Walsh and Cliff Traynor.

The next Guy Pickering Charity Challenge event was due to start this week with play on Wednesday and Thursday nights. At the time of writing these notes the weather forecast was not favourable for either night.

All members and visitors are reminded that under the current health orders they are only permitted to be on the Club premises – both inside and outside – if they have been double vaccinated.

In addition to our normal Saturday bowls, this weekend is the scheduled day for a Sunday Funday. This involves nominated teams of pairs with play consisting of two games.

Entries should be made at the Club and close on Saturday evening.

Men bowlers are advised to check the notice board for information concerning the Club Triples Championship and also the Annual General Meeting for the Men’s Bowling Club.
