The first lot of bowls news for 2022 and quite a lot of play in the week gone by. On Thursday a total of 30 players enjoyed the fine and warm conditions with just a little bit of wind to contend with.

There were some visitors from Harden and Tumut and some locals who have not played recently.

The vouchers for the day went to Graeme Rossiter and Terry Ricketts who won their game by 18 shots.

The other winning teams and their margins were Albert Carter, Shane McKellar and Bob Ruhl – 16 shots, Chris Wright, Scott Douglas and Vic Brown – 13 shots, Tony Foster, Fred Thompson and Terry Holmes – 13 shots, Ted Loader and Geoff Holt – 4 shots and Martin Betcher and Harold Anderson – 4 shots.

After play concluded on Thursday there was a presentation to Chris Wright who is the Vice–President of the Young Branch of Can–Assist. The money was collected from players who play a bowl on the wrong bias.

Some players do this on a regular basis while others do this very rarely. Tony Ruhl keeps an eye out for wrong–bias bowls and ensures that the money is paid by the offending players.

A semi–final of the Club Triples was played on Saturday afternoon with John Cooper, Geoff Holt and Peter Watts up against Bob Ruhl, Andrew Hutchison and Terry Mulligan.

The first 10 ends saw each team win 5 ends and score 10 shots.

Terry’s team then won 5 of the next 6 ends to lead 20–12 but Peter’s team scored 8 shots on the next 2 ends to level the scores at 20–all.

After 22 ends the score was 23–22 in Terry’s favour but Peter’s team won the final 3 ends to win 31–23.

There were 18 other players involved in Jackpot Bowls with Les Fanning and Colin Powell clear winners of the vouchers with a margin of 16 shots.

Albert Carter, Max Penfold and Mark Brownlie won their game by 6 shots as did Steve Walsh and Joe Bargwanna. The other winning team with a margin of 2 shots was Ian Gailey and Denis Rosen.

There was an afternoon of social bowls on Sunday with 20 players involved.

Play consisted of two short games of 3–Bowl Pairs with prizes allocated by random draw.

After play there were some short speeches of farewell for Leslie Johnson who has decided to move to other employment after first starting work at the Club in 2012 and being Bar Supervisor for a period of eight years.

All men and women bowlers are reminded of the extension of time for entries in the Club Fours and Mixed Pairs Championships. The closing date for both events is Thursday 27th January.

The first games for the Mixed Pairs will be on Saturday 29th January and the first games for the Club Fours will be played on 30th January.

Next Sunday – 23rd January – will see the next day for Sunday Funday. An entry sheet is on the notice board.

Unfortunately, the rain on Sunday prevented any play for the other semi–final of the Club Triples and also for some social groups.

Bowlers should check the notices concerning upcoming events – especially the information about the Club Fours Championships and Mixed Pairs Championships.

Wishing all those reading this article a Merry Christmas and a Happy, safe and healthy New Year.
