Bowls

A number of Championship games were completed during the week.

On Friday, Geoff Holt and Damien Miller were involved in a semi–final of the Club Singles. Some telling bowls in the first few ends gave Damien an early advantage and he continued his good form to win the game 31–6.

On Sunday, eight games were completed in the Club Pairs Championship. There were four games in the first round with play starting at 10.15am.

The results were: Russell Boyd (sub) and Cliff Traynor defeated Ted Loader and Denis Rosen 25–20; Stephen Walsh and Colin Stokell defeated Tony Ruhl and James Freudenstein 21–14; Damien Miller and David Quigley defeated Brian March and Joe Bargwanna 30–15 and John Cooper and Harold Anderson defeated Albert Carter and Terry Mulligan 23–13.

The lights were put to good use in the second round games with the last players leaving the green well after 6 o’clock.

Russell Boyd and Cliff Traynor defeated Colin Powell and Les Fanning 22–13; Stephen Walsh and Colin Stokell defeated Ged Hardman (sub) and Peter Slater 18–17; Damien Miller and David Quigley defeated Michael Webb and Tom Preston 31–8 and Geoff Holt and Graeme Edgerton defeated John Cooper and Harold Anderson 21–18. Thanks to Margo Parker for her work as the umpire for the day.

Earlier in the week, there were 28 players for Thursday afternoon bowls. The highest winning margin was 12 shots for James Freudenstein and John Cooper. Just behind them with a margin of 11 shots were Stephen Walsh and Tom Preston. Other winners were Aldo Malvicino and Joe Bargwanna (1 shot), Greg Woods and Les Fanning (1 shot), Milan Brankovic and Geoff DeBritt (3 shots), Terry Holmes and Cliff Traynor (4 shots) and Wally Chater and Col Chapman (7 shots).

Fewer players than usual were there on Saturday with some reserving their energy for Sunday’s games. The fourteen players in attendance enjoyed quite good conditions.

The combination of Albert Carter and Col Chapman took out the vouchers when they won their game by 10 shots. Ian Gailey and John Cooper won by 6 shots and Alan Gall, Joe Bargwanna and David Ward won by 7 shots.

The draws for the District Pairs have been completed and are on the noticeboard. Players are reminded that entries for the District Singles close on Friday 24th July.

Thanks to the Club members who gave up their time on Monday to assist with the erection of the new shades for Green 1.

The sympathies of all Club members are extended to the family of Walter Briggs who passed away last week. Walter was a Life Member of the Club and a person who made strong contributions to a number of organisations in the town over many years.
