Young hosted the Zone 8 Grade 3 Pennant Finals over the weekend in fine and sunny conditions.

Only three of the six districts were represented at this level – Narrandera (winner for the Riverina District), Junee (winner for the Wagga District) and Henty (winner for the Albury District).

On Saturday afternoon Narrandera played Junee in what was the closest contest for the weekend.

The Junee side led for most of the game but over the final few ends Narrandera took the lead and were winners by 58 shots to 55.

Junee won two of the three games 18–15 and 21–16 but a good win of 27–16 for Narrandera in the third game proved the difference. Narrandera scored 8 points and Junee 2 points.

Sunday morning saw Junee opposed to Henty.

After a fairly even start the Junee side took the upper hand and won all three games to record a score of 73–44. The individual game scores were 21–16, 23–15 and 29–13.

The 10 points for Junee put them ahead of Narrandera with the game between Henty and Narrandera to come.

In the afternoon games Narrandera dominated the scoring on one rink winning 16 of the 21 ends for a 40–10 victory.

They also won on the other two rinks 21–10 and 21–10 so that the overall margin was 82–30.

This gave the Narrandera side 10 points and the title. They will now go on to contest the State Pennant Finals in mid–July.

The Cootamundra Ex–Services Grade 5 side are to be congratulated on winning the Zone 8 Pennant Finals.

The Cootamundra side won their sectional games against North Albury 71–55 and Narrandera 54–42 to qualify for the final. They defeated Ariah Park 69–45 in the final.

The Harden Grade 4 side also did well by winning their two sectional games to qualify for the final. They defeated Leeton and District 67–42 and Tumut 58–49.

In the final they lost 49–68 to the very strong side from Temora. There was no play at the club on Thursday with rain starting to fall about ten minutes before starting time and continuing throughout the afternoon.

Play on Saturday afternoon saw 18 players on the green.

The triples team of Aldo Malvicino, Jeff Jacquier and Vic Brown won their game by 10 shots and this was enough to give them the vouchers for the day.

In the other games Scott Douglas and Tom Preston won by 8 shots, Brian Christie and Mark Anderson won by 7 shots and Greg Woods and Harold Anderson won by 6 shots.

There were 12 teams of pairs involved on Sunday afternoon in the Sunday Funday event. Play consisted of two games of 12 ends with players swapping positions after the first game.

The winners for the afternoon were John and Kate Cooper with Jenny Holt and Sheila Traynor the runners–up.

Members are reminded that it is possible to check out the photos from the Centenary Dinner with details on display in the club. Club membership renewals should be made at the Young Services Club.
