Once again, the weekend brought weather extremes – a long-lasting storm on Friday night, very heavy rain on Saturday and fine and sunny conditions on Sunday.
The rain prevented any play on Saturday but the women’s Summer League games were able to be held on Sunday afternoon.
The weather at Ariah Park was somewhat better for the start of the Zone 8 Championships with the Singles Championships being completed in all three divisions. Damien Miller was the South Western District representative in the Open division and defeated David Ivanoff (Wagga) 31–27 on Saturday afternoon. He followed this up with a 31-15 win over Jordan Dennis (Southern Highlands) on Sunday morning to move into the final against Bruce Lack (Southern Slopes). Despite playing good bowls, Damien was unable to match the experience of Bruce and lost the final 31-20. This is the third year in a row that Bruce has won the Zone 8 Singles and Damien was runner–up to him in 2018.
In the Senior Singles, the district winner was Jim White from Cootamundra Ex–Services and in Sunday’s semi–final he was defeated 31–30 by Graeme Rossiter from Tumut. In the President’s Reserve division, Jason Jones from Cootamundra Ex–Service won his game 31–30 against Bob Robertson (Wagga Rules) on Saturday but lost 31–23 against Brock Shore from Tumbarumba on Sunday morning.
Locally conditions on Thursday were good and 20 players were on the green.
The vouchers for the afternoon went to Max Penfold and Colin Powell with a winning margin of 13 shots. Other winning teams and their margins were Milan Brankovic and Terry Holmes (11 shots), Max Cooke and Cliff Traynor (11 shots), Ned Kelly and Les Fanning (10 shots) and Harold Anderson and Bob Ruhl (5 shots).
During the week, play continued in the Guy Pickering Charity Challenge on Tuesday and Thursday nights. On Tuesday night, the Drop Kicks were the winners over Envision after a count–back when both teams scored 17 points.
For the second week in a row the FATBBOTS were the winners on Thursday night with a score of 17 points.
Players are reminded that entries for the Minor Singles and Minor Pairs close on Saturday 14th November.
Entries for the Mixed Pairs Championship close on Sunday 15th November.
The Zone Pairs Championships will be played at Ariah Park over the weekend.
Good luck to Damien Miller and David Quigley in the Open division and to John Cooper and Peter Watts in the Seniors division.
Members should note that the Club raffles and Fishing Club raffles are being held on Friday nights. The Club Members draw has also restarted on Friday nights.
