It certainly is great to be back playing bowls after several months in isolation. While the occasional roll-up was allowed, the Club had to maintain social distancing at all times.
The South West District and Young Club Championships are now underway with a very tight schedule to make up for lost time.
On Saturday, 29th June, the 1st round of the Major Club Pairs was played. Robyn Tierney and Kathryn Betcher won 19/11 against Jill Rosen and Therese Ruhl; Heather Bailey and Judith Mulligan defeated Ann Gardner and Julie Alavoine 22/14, while Elsie Hines and Margo Parker had a very convincing win over Sheila Traynor and Margaret Gailey.
The Pairs Championship will continue on Wednesday 8th July, with Robyn and Kathryn playing Elsie and Margo, while on Sunday 12th July, Jenny Holt and Kate Cooper play Margaret Glasheen and Judy Watson. Then on Tuesday 14th July, Heather and Judith play the winner of the game between Kate and Judy’s team.
Back in March, when coronavirus took hold, the SWD Senior Fours game was suspended after only completing the first round. Last Thursday 2nd July, the semi-final was played between Harden and Young at Young. The Young team of Margaret Glasheen, Ann Gardner, Julie Alavoine and Judy Watson defeated the Harden side 22/11. In the afternoon, Judy’s team played the final against Judith Mulligan, Heather Bailey, Elsie Hines and Margaret Gailey also from Young. It was a great final with scores very close, especially towards the end. Margaret Gailey’s team won 24/16 and will now go on to the Regional play-off at Wagga Rules Club in September.
A reminder that Tuesday is no longer one of the Club’s social playing days. Social bowls will now be held on Thursdays and while Championship events are being held, other days will be utilized as well. The monthly Club meetings will no longer be held on Mondays, but will now be held every 2nd Thursday of the month, with one being held this Thursday, 9th July.
