2020 Boorowa Picnic Races

The Boorowa Picnic Race Club committee held a meeting on Tuesday the 17th of March to discuss the future of the upcoming race meeting, scheduled for Saturday the 2nd of May in light of the coronavirus outbreak in Australia.

The meeting was called following the Prime Minister’s decision to ban non-essential gatherings of more than 100 people and Racing NSW’s ruling that thoroughbred race meetings, barrier trials and trackwork across NSW close to the public due to the coronavirus (COVID-19). Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases.

Tom Kelly, President, Boorowa Race Club said, “Our race meet is just over six weeks away and it’s very clear to us it will not be possible for the event to take place. Public health must come first. We are working on a plan to stage the 2020 Picnic Races later in the year.”

“I know this is hugely disappointing news for our members, the many people who work in the racing industry and the thousands who were looking forward to this year’s event, but these are exceptional times and this is the responsible thing to do. We are working closely with Racing NSW and are still hopeful we will be able to have a race meeting later in the year”

In 2019, the Boorowa Picnic Races saw many attendees from across NSW and is one of Boorowa’s most popular events in the calendar.
