Under the guidance of a small steering committee comprised of local teachers, the town librarian and community members, the community came together last week to celebrate the inaugural Harden Community Book Event.

Around 400 children from Bunyip Daycare/Preschool, Trinity Primary School, Murrumburrah Public School, Murrumburrah High School and Jugiong Public School joined 200 community members for a collection of activities, a book swap, a book parade and a sausage sizzle to finish.

A large group from Flexible Care arrived dressed as Smurfs, adding to the joy of attendees.

Rotarian Rita O’Connor said it was an incredible day.

“MPS teacher Erica Menz was the instigator and convenor for the event, and she kept us to task in the weeks leading up to it. The committee was extraordinary, and we received enormous support from many local businesses.”

“Proceeds from entrance fees and raffles were then donated to the Rotary Club of Murrumburrah-Harden to support our ongoing book program.”

“Thank you to everyone who was involved, to all those who dressed up, participated and thoroughly enjoyed being part of such a wonderful community event. ‘Booking an adventure in Harden’ was a truly joyous event and successful community celebration of reading,” said Rita. image2-(4)
