Boorowa Irish Woolfest Upcycled Fashion Contest Underway

Upcycled fashion takes clothes that would otherwise be thrown away and reinvents them.
The Boorowa Irish Woolfest Upcycled Fashion Contest is underway, with contestants from across the Hilltops and beyond seeking out woollen items to begin their pieces.
The new competition calls for a wearable, fully upcycled garment containing at least 50% wool fibre in keeping with Woolfest.
Lyn Diskon from the Boorowa Irish Woolfest Upcycled Fashion Contest is encouraging eveyone to have a go at upcycling something.
“Upcycling does not have to be hard however; it does take a little more time than going to the shop to buy something straight off the hanger. Sewing and upcycling are not instant; it takes time to make something new from something old.”
“It is a very creative process, from measuring and fitting, trying a garment on along the way and making decisions on how the new item should look at every stage of the making process. Remember, something unique is being made!”“The more someone sews and makes, the more experience and confidence they gain, and their skills continue to build. It’s extremely satisfying. Building up sewing skills on a sewing machine happens very quickly with practice – like riding a bike!”“In this competition, everyone is encouraged to not be afraid to try! Just enjoy the process. Any mistakes can be unpicked fairly quickly with a stitch unpick and resewn again.”
“Competition judges are aware that everything will be made out of pre-loved materials, which means that some fabrics may have minor imperfections, and will allow for that,” said Lyn.
Entries close on the 29th of August.
