Harden Junior Red Devils U10s coach Jeremy Martin was blown away by his young team’s impressive victory at the season’s grand final game, where they won 26 to 19 on their homeground.
“It was unreal,” Martin said.
“I don’t know how to express how the kids were feeling.”
“They were tied 19 all just minutes before the end of the game and Harry Smith ran down the sideline to score and the crowd just exploded.”
“That said it all. The roar of the crowd.
They were over the moon. It has been a great season.”
Last year, they were just trying to get enough interest to get a team together.
“We expected to get one team with 12 members, but we ended up with 50 kids registered and three teams,” Martin said.
“All year has been a big step forward, but winning the grand final was a massive leap forward.”
All week, leading up to the grand final, signs of support were up in shop windows and people were decorating their homes.
“We trained on the Saturday before the grand final and the team had a little message from a Brumby star,” Martin said.
“The number of community members who turned up was amazing. It has been a great season.”
The team stayed back to support a number of their friends on the Yabbies side play their games.
“It was definitely a club achievement, with everybody involved from coaches, other age group team members and the community supporters,” Martin said.
“This was the first event of its kind for us in 13 years.”
“My big objective is to give kids that don’t normally play in a team sport the opportunity for them to do so. Getting more kids involved. We play every second Sunday.”
