CWA Boorowa – Will You Join?

Did you know that the Boorowa Branch of the Country Women’s Association was established on the 10th of November 1923?
The meeting was chaired by Mrs Hanna Philomena Corcoran of “Corcoran’s Plains”, with the speaker being Mrs Florence Laver, Vice-President of the Crookwell Branch (the first NSW CWA Branch).
Mrs Laver explained that the CWA was a community of the NSW women being drawn together by separate branches working together, yet separately, in a community spirit.
The organisation sought to bring about a neighbourly, friendly, sisterly interest in the district and in NSW as a whole.
At the meeting Mrs Ada Bevan (from Reid’s Flat) was elected President. The membership fee was 4s annually, and it was hoped that there would be many members signing up.
Things have changed in the CWA over the years.
This year the organisation’s theme is “Embracing and celebrating diversity in our centenary year”, which was clearly in action at the meeting held at the Boorowa Ex-Services and Citizen’s Club last week.
Approximately a dozen women participated in the meeting where they learned from Geraldine Gore (President of the South-West Group) and Jenny Thompson (Vice-President of the South-West Group) that the Boorowa Branch of the CWA would close unless its membership grows.
Each meeting participant was asked what they’d like to happen with the Branch, and it was resoundingly agreed that none wanted it to fold.
Each participant was then asked what they wanted to see the Branch doing in future, and the themes that arose were:
- Celebrating the Boorowa Branch centenary in 2023
- Teaching teenagers and children life skills
- Enhancing diversity of membership
As it was recognised that many women have paid and unpaid employment, an evening meeting will be held to learn more from participants about their vision for the Boorowa Branch and to elect office holders:
Date: Wednesday 14th September 2022
Time: 6:30pm - 7:30pm
Location: Boorowa Ex-Services and Citizen’s Club, Pudman Street, Boorowa.
Membership is $44 per annum.
