Silo Sounds final concert for this year will feature returning pianist Alexander Yau.
By request, Alex will be performing an afternoon of operatic arias and virtuoso piano, featuring works by Debussy, Ravel and Liszt, while adding a couple of songs by Faure, Strauss and Tchaikovsky.
Chairperson for Silo Sounds Stewart Bruce said, “Alexander Yau is a supremely versatile and passionate musician—an accomplished pianist, chamber musician, vocalist, clarinettist, conductor, composer, and arranger.”
He is a multiple-prize winner in prestigious international competitions, is a proud Juilliard alumnus earning his Masters degree under Matti Raekallio and founded the Ole Bohn Chamber Orchestra in 2020, conducting Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 from the keyboard in its inaugural concert.
He has performed at Canberra International Music Festival, Government House, Polish Embassy, Phoenix Central Park, City Recital Hall in Sydney, as well as iconic international venues such as Grieg’s Troldhaugen in Norway, Villa Mosconi Bertani in Verona, Alice Tully Hall and Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Lincoln Centre.
Alex has also released his debut album in collaboration with clarinettist Deborah de Graaff—featuring his own compositions alongside works by fellow Australian composers.
In 2023, he was assistant conductor for Madama Butterfly in the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour production.
Since last performing at Silo Sounds, Alex has had a number of highlights.
Early this year, he achieved a significant academic milestone when he began working as an Associate Lecturer in the Collaborative Piano Faculty at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
In May, he gave a richly poetic and masterful recital at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney—“Music in a Fantastical and Divine World”—performing Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata and Sonata quasi Fantasia, Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit and Jeux d’eau, and selected Liszt works, evoking a blend of imagination and devotion.
Throughout July and August, Alex has been travelling through Europe, studying, performing and conducting.
Silo Sounds final concert of the year, ‘Alexander Yau in concert’ will take place next Sunday, the 7th of September at 2pm.
The concert will be held at the Ross Memorial Uniting Church in Murrumburrah, which is now fully air conditioned.
Following the concert will be the famous high tea so book ahead to help catering.
