Bates & Cassidy Convincingly! Round 2 of the Men’s 4BBB Championship came around on Saturday and was brought by 2 Club legends Herb Manwaring & Eric Kuhn as hosts and sponsors.

The round 1 leaders again proved too strong and ran away convincing winners of this year’s Championships by a massive 7 points overall. Darrell Cassidy & Robert Bates posted rounds of 47 on day 1 and 46 on day 2 showing their well forged friendship and golf partnering regularly is just far too good a golf to ignore. The boys will get the silverware at the end of year toasting of the Champions.

The day’s event was picked up by the visitor contingent from Yass. Mark Partridge and Sam Porter who are regular visitors to the Club, came over for a day out with their mates and played very consistent golf to claim the daily prize with a handy 47 points. Balls went back to 44 points and were awarded to R Bates and D Cassidy (46), H Manwaring & B Wales (46) and M Baldry and Rick Preston (44). Runner up in the Championships were Michael Baldry and Rick Preston.

An individual Stableford was run in conjunction with the days 4BBB event for a Club voucher and was won by Herby Manwaring who shot a very impressive 41 points to claim same, 3 points clear of next best Michael Baldry who shot 38 points.

Ev Shea Wins the Glover Medal
Karen Glover was host and sponsor for the Ladies May Monthly Medal being the 3rd Medal, Stroke and Putting event on Saturday. The winner with a hard fought 75 nett was Ev Shea. Ev proved too good for the field with her mate Maryanne Fitzgerald the nearest contender 2 shots adrift.

Maryanne did however claim the putting competition on the ever-quickening greens with only 29 used with the flat stick. Marj Manwaring claimed a further ball in the field.

Manwaring Claims Midweek in Countback
Having a good week of form was Herbie Manwaring. He won the Saturday individual event but before this he collected the midweek 12 hole par 24 Stableford also. Herb has shot 28 points or 4 better than his handicap to win on a countback from a desperately unlucky Ron Kerr, also on 28 points.

Herb lost all 4 shots he played better than his handicap by and resumes this week on 8.5. Ron Kerr lost none and will be in the box seat this week.

Coming 3rd was regular podium finisher David James who was 1 shot back on 27 points. Tie for 4th went to another Ron Kerr round tied with Garth Webb on 25 points. The keeper of scores and notes has remarked that this week has seen a better field average score this week than how the course played the previous week. 2 weeks ago, 60% of the field did not make 20 points, this week only 7% reached this status. Hmmn maths teachers....

Pennants Close – but No Cigar
Round 1 of this year’s Men’s Handicap Pennant season kicked off on Sunday at Cootamundra. The boys were up against the historically hot and cold Gundagai team and were pipped by 1 hole over the 5v matches.

At number 5, Tim Beveridge ran into a wizened veteran who showed him the door convincingly, yet poor Tim ran out of juice in the cart and had a day to forget. At 4, Craig Filmer started on fire being 7 up through 7 and recording a hole in one at the downhill par 3 fifth hole, before seeing off his opposite 6/5. Brian Wales putted the lights out by all accounts and came home a 4/3 winner.

Nathan Hawkins comes into the team this year with a run of recent strong form. Nathan was 2 up into the back 9 before the course and his opposite number reeled him in to be 2/1 down. Tam Kennedy had the hopes of the team on him at 2 matches all in the Clubhouse. Tam advises he played his butt off but just could not contain Gundagai Captain John Stuckey who prevailed at 1 up for a thrilling finish.

This Sunday the boys play Cootamundra at Young from 10.30am tee. The team will be contacted for this match.

This Week
The gents will be playing for their June Medal and the Parkers Smash Repairs trophy and Guzzlers Mug.

The girls will be playing their 4th Medal for the Ev Shea trophy and it will be in both stroke and stableford scoring.

Ladies, your Tournament will be on Wednesday so do not forget to lock that away and to contact Pat and Marj to see if they need a hand with anything for the day.

Cheers all Alby
