Young local Maree Myhill has had her story published in Volume 11 of Seniors’ Stories.

In keeping with this year’s theme ‘Then and Now’, Maree wrote a story about her late mother’s life, and not being able to call her as she always did on Sundays. ‘No More Sunday Phone Calls’ tells of memories of her mother when she was growing up, through to her long life in her nineties, remembering events that shaped and changed her mother’s life.

“I was grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to this year’s Seniors’ Stories and to put Young and the Hilltops Region on the map. I encourage all seniors to tell their story,” said Maree.

The writing competition aims to celebrate the lives and contributions of seniors giving them an opportunity to share their own short stories about their life experiences.

It is open to all Seniors Card and Senior Savers Card holders. The program has been running since 2013 and has published over 1,100 seniors stories since its inception. The books are distributed to the stories authors and libraries across the state.

One hundred literary works were selected for this year’s publication from 350 entries and one hundred and twenty people attended the launch at the State Library in Sydney.

Maree felt privileged to attend the launch and receive a copy of the book with her published story and to connect with other excited, like-minded authors and supporters. Her story connected with readers and she received a lot of warm feedback after people heard her story read as an audiobook.

Maree would like to encourage other writers to share their stories, with next year’s theme to be announced in the new year. “It is a wonderful opportunity to write a short story, to promote seniors’ storytelling and share with others,” she said.
