Hilltops wines have won big at the 2025 Canberra and Region Wine Show last week.

Hilltops entrants won six Top Gold Medals, four Gold Medals and 14 Silver Medal in an impressive haul for the small wine region.

99 Hilltops GI wines were entered (the exact same tally as 2024) comprising about a third of the total 345 show entries.

The Hilltops Trophy winners include:

  • Hungerford Hill Sangiovese 2024 – Best Sangiovese
  • Hungerford Hill Tempranillo Graciano 2024 – Best Dry Red Other Varieties and/or Blends
  • Hungerford Hill Tempranillo Graciano 2024 – Hilltops Wine of the Year 2024
  • Shaw Wines Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 – Best Cabernet Sauvignon

Gold Medal winners from the Hilltops were:

  • Hungerford Hill Hilltops Shiraz 2023
  • Linear Tempranillo 2024
  • Mada Bit of Heaven Sangiovese 2024
  • Moppity Lock & Key Riesling 2025

Hilltops Wine President, James Bowman, proprietor of Barwang Wines, believes in the strong alliance between the Canberra and Hilltops regions, highlighting that for two years in a row the Canberra Show results have confirmed the region’s impressively consistent viticultural reputation.

“These accolades again showcase the commitment, skill, passion and innovative approach of Hilltops vignerons and other region’s winemakers, who increasingly seek out top quality grapes from our cool vineyards.”

“For such a small region to score six Top Golds endorses our growing reputation for alternative red grape varieties ranging from tempranillo and graciano to sangiovese and malbec.”

“The classic Hilltops reds, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon are up there too, and all celebrate the skills of many winemakers attracted by Hilltops grapes.”

“Their awarded wines are a serious endorsement of our region’s viticultural strengths and diversity.”

The Hilltops Wine of the Year 2025 and other medalists will be celebrated again in early December by the Hilltops Vineyards Association.
