Innovation for workplace-ready students

Boorowa Central School is preparing to open a new Innovation Centre.

The agricultural shed has been refitted, designed as a space to inspire job-relevant skills.

Agriculture, Mathematics, Personal Development, Health & Physical Education (PDHPE) and Science Head Teacher Andrew Corcoran hopes the space will inspire students and develop skills relevant to their future employment.

“We will have it set up so the students can tinker, redesign and get certain challenges using different materials and by thinking in different ways,” Mr Corcoran said.

“It’s to encourage future-focused skills that modern workplaces are currently looking for.”

It’s designed to be an adaptable workspace, where students can explore what they want to. There are whiteboards for designing plans and worktables can move about for bigger projects.

“It’s for Kindergarten to Year 12 students, for all classes. It will be especially useful in mathematics, science, art and electives. The Boorowa Central School Innovation Centre has been designed for passion projects instead of directed learning,” he said.

The school is appealing for hair dryers, newspapers, safety earmuffs, magazines, plastic storage tubs even without lids, jars, kettles, egg cartons, toilet paper/paper towel cardboard rolls, marbles/ball bearings, sponges, aprons, fabric, clean plastic bottles, Lego, compass sets, funnels, corks, fishing line and drying racks for both dish and clothes.

The donations will give students parts to use in their projects. These donations can be left at the school’s office.

The Innovation Centre is set to open within a month.
