Boorowa Business Chamber will host a breakfast event at Peppers Cafe on Thursday, August 10 from 7:30 am to 9 am to discuss the impact of market factors and possible steps to address labour shortages your business faces.

The conversation will be led by Malcolm Peak who runs an HR advisory business supporting a range of regional and metro businesses across New South Wales and Queensland.

Mr Peak will also share some strategies and insights gained from recent research into the recruitment and retention messages of 140 organisations across 10 industry sectors - competitors for the type of people you’re seeking to employ.

Enough has been said about the damage COVID and resultant lockdowns have inflicted upon regional communities.

As the world moves out of a lockdown mindset, there are a number of trends that have implications for recruitment and retention in regional Australia:

  • Metropolitan companies are now demanding employees return to the office at least a few days per week, rendering long-distance telecommuting less attractive;
  • Significant economic headwinds have already resulted in widespread job losses in a range of industries (particularly in service industries);
  • Technology has connected the regions with metropolitan areas, but to the detriment of local real estate prices which have skyrocketed pricing out local residents;
  • AI has changed the face of the modern workplace, with the potential for many professional roles becoming redundant in the not-to-distant future; and
  • The demand for trade and associated roles has started to rise with significant government investment in infrastructure and energy projects.
