Members from the Lions Club of Young travelled to Coleambally for the annual 201/N4 District Convention held over the weekend of October 21 to 23.

The convention is an event where clubs from across the district come together to be entertained by events and presentations.

This year, the Lions Club of Young was awarded the very prestigious PDG Albert Palm Memorial Club Award for the top club in District 201/N4 for the year 2021-22.

President Paul Miller accepted the award on behalf of the club, expressing his gratitude to all members for their dedication to serving our community.

Speaking for the club, Lyn Freudenstein said members were thrilled and proud that their efforts and service had been recognised from among the 46 clubs across the district.

“The award is determined by points being accrued for each club,” Mrs Freudenstein said.

“Examples are 30 points for each new member, then follow points for club bulletin, publicity, attendance at conventions along with meetings and training are some others.”

Over the past 12 months, the club has focused on fundraising - mini lotto, barbecues and catering at Bunnings, trot meetings and farmers markets - to build up to pre-COVID levels where they were distributing $40 to $50,000 each year.

The club continued its “Link with a Lion” service project, building with newsletters and get-togethers.

They also focused on helping lonely community members interact with each other and encouraged people to enjoy social events.

Other services they provide included catering for school and community groups, meals on wheels and hosting the District’s Convention in February (postponed from 2020/22 due to COVID).

Mrs Freudenstein said that Young Lions would continue those activities.

“Our major new project is in partnership with Hilltops Council, Hilltops Youth Action Group and Young Landcare Group, which is the renovation/revitalisation of Lions Lookout,” she said.

“Planting of trees and shrubs is planned for autumn 2023.”

Mrs Freudenstein invited community members to attend a Lions meeting as a guest.

“See how Lions works as a service organisation, serving their community and humanity,” she said.

“Come along to some of our activities if you wish.”

“You can take as long as you like to see if Lions fits into your life.”

“One important point that is often forgotten about, being a member of Lions is the necessity to have fun.”

“The fellowship amongst members across clubs is a great plus, along with the satisfaction and sense of fulfilment of achievement in being part of a group, achieving and contributing to our community.”

“There are also many other options in serving communities, particularly if there isn’t an existing club, such as club branches, specialty clubs along with Leo clubs for school students, then up to 30 years of age.”

“Membership Chair for Young Club is Stuart Freudenstein - 0427 113 372.”

“Don’t hesitate to call with any questions.”
