There may have been some brollies and gumboots, but even the weather couldn’t dampen spirits at the Harden Kite Festival last weekend.

Member of the organising committee, Lucy said the event was better than they all expected, considering the weather.

“Being the first time after two years of not having the event, we were excited to see so many children and families attend,” Lucy said.

“The kite flyers came from across Australia, and they had a challenge to get their bigger kites in the sky.”

The small-town Festival played host to about one-and-a-half thousand people eager to fly kites or watch those flying them.

Events like this don’t happen without a lot of community support and Lucy sent out a massive thanks to their sponsors, NSW Government, Graymont, Coppabella Wind Farm and Hilltops Council.

“We couldn’t have had this event go ahead withough your help,” she said. “Kids loved the one thousand free kites to decorate and fly.”

“Everyone loved watching the free circus shows by Circus McCabe.”

“Special thanks to Kathy and Jess for providing a whole day of free face painting and balloon art.”

Another highlight of the day was the amazing African drumming, the bubble fairy, the rides and the market stalls.

There was something for everyone to do, see and experience.

This year’s event was organised by a new committee that had never run the Harden Kite Festival before and they can be proud of what they have achieved.

“We had a couple of working bees, and the day before, all of us were wet setting up the event,” Lucy said.

“On Festival day, we had numerous community groups involved, including Junior Rugby League, Coota Netball Club and Trinity Catholic School, Harden Murrumburrah Rotary, and Harden Murrumburrah Camera Club - thank you so much for all the hard work.”

The organising committee is made up of a small group of individuals who’ve recently joined and the group is growing.

They invite new members to join.

Member of the Harden Murrumburrah Arts Council, Greg Medway said Lucy and the young team had done a fantastic job of organising the Harden Kite Festival.

“I must say, it was very sophisticated,” Greg said.

“It was fabulous.”

Greg apologised on behalf of the Arts Council for the cancellation of the inaugural Harden Murrumburrah Silo Art Fest.

It isn’t the end of the event, though, it has been moved to Sunday, March 12 next year and will now form part of the Hilltops Art Trail. Mark the date in your diary, you won’t want to miss it.
