The green thumbs over at the Murrumburrah-Harden Community Garden have been busily working to ensure it remains a stunning place for people to visit.

They held a strawberry workshop on Wednesday, May 3 at which Robert Fitzpatrick pulled up the bed of juicy red fruit, sorted out the best runners and replanted a fresh bed of berries.

Rita O’Connor said some who attended the free event were able to take a strawberry runner home with them.

“The first thing we noticed was the large number of scarab grubs (the larval stage of the scarab beetles),” Ms O’Connor said.

“They had eaten most of the roots of the strawberries.”

“So Rob replanted in a new bed, laying dynamic lifter in the rows first, then planting new strawberries.”

“Thank you to everyone who came down, including those who also planted small pots of vegetables, herbs and flowers to sell at the Mother’s Day street party.”

“Despite the cold, the garden is looking terrific.”

You can pick up some potted vegetable and flower seedlings, strawberry runners and herbs at today’s Harden Mother’s Day street party on Neill Street from 3:30 pm to 6 pm.

Items cost between $1 and $2 each.

The community garden will be part of the Rotary stall.
