Spring has definitely settled in at the Murrumburrah-Harden Community Gardens, with flashes of bright colour everywhere you look.

Rita O’Connor will speak about how the Community Gardens are flourishing at the next coffee meeting of the Murrumburrah-Harden Hospital Auxiliary on Wednesday, November 8 at 10:30 am at the Harden Bowling Club.

It is a pleasure walking around the gardens at different times of the day, listening to the buzz of bees or the excited chatter of children.

There is nothing better during the spring months than to meander through a beautiful day among the assorted aromas of the garden.

Not only are the flowers blooming, but also beans, snow peas, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, you name it - it is all there waiting for someone to pick it and take it home for dinner.

Now, we’re heading into November and the green thumbs out there are already planning what they need to do for the garden next.

Here are a few tips:

  • Check soil around your lemon trees isn’t drying out and give them a little fertiliser.
  • Once the foliage has died down, lift tulip bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place for next season.
  • Lay snail bait around vegetable beds to keep snails and snugs away from your veggies.
  • Move tender potted plants away from excessive late afternoon sun.
  • Cut back the parsley to stop it from running to seed.
  • Once your roses have stopped flowering, prune them.
  • Water your tomatoes regularly during the drier months.
