Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor is encouraging local organisations in Hume to apply for the Federal Government’s Sport and Physical Grants program, which aims to break down the barriers to people getting active.

The program will focus on providing grants to organisations encouraging people to get involved in local sport, particularly people with disabilities, new migrants and indigenous people.

“Playing sport is a great way to get involved in your local community, to meet new people and to stay healthy and active. We want everyone to feel welcome to join in at their local sporting clubs because sport is such a big part of life here in Hume,” Mr Taylor said.

“The grants are open to not-for-profit organisations including local community organisations, sporting organisations and local government entities.”

Eligible individuals and community groups include:

  • Newly arrived migrants and refugees;
  • People with a physical or mental disability
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; and
  • Women;

Eligible activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Engaging with community organisations to deliver sport and physical activity projects;
  • Coaching clinics to teach sports skills and techniques;
  • Participation in local sports competitions;
  • Instruction in exercise and physical activity classes delivered by qualified instructors;
  • Research and data collection; and
  • Recruitment and engagement of translators required to deliver the activities.
