On Thursday 27th January there were 22 players taking part in warm but pleasant conditions.

Most games were closely contested but in the triples game Ted Loader, Colin Stokell and Harold Anderson won by 29 shots.

Brian Christie and Col Chapman won their game by 6 shots, Brian March and John Cooper had a winning margin of 4 shots, and in the other two games the margins were 3 shots for the teams of Milan Brankovic and Les Fanning and Andrew Hutchison and George Somerville.

There were five games of Mixed Pairs scheduled to be played on Saturday but just before play was due to commence it started to rain and in a very short time the greens were underwater. This resulted in play for the day being abandoned.

Sunday afternoon saw the first games played in the Club Fours Championship. Despite a couple of showers early in the afternoon the games were completed without interruption. The game that saw John Cooper, Martin Betcher, Geoff Holt and Peter Watts playing Michel Alavoine, Aldo Malvicino, Stuart Freudenstein and Terry Mulligan got away to an even start with Terry’s team leading 5–4 after 7 ends. Peter’s team then won 12 of the remaining ends to win 31–8.

There was a similar result in the game where Damien Miller, Darryle Miller, Jono Watson and David Quigley played Brian March, Harold Anderson, Joe Bargwanna and Geoff DeBritt with David’s team winning 28–9.

After 10 ends in the game that saw Milan Brankovic, Albert Carter, Ian Gailey and Cliff Traynor opposed to Ted Loader, Greg Woods, Glen Benson and Denis Rosen the score was 11–9 in Cliff’s favour. Cliff’s team then won 6 of the next 8 ends to lead 23–13 and they went on to win 24–18.

The final game saw Brian Christie, Vic Brown, Ian Schofield and Russell Boyd playing Colin Chapman, Rod Cummings, Colin Powell and George Somerville. The first half of the game was very low–scoring with the scores level at 6–all after 11 ends. George’s team won 4 of the next 6 ends to lead 15–9 and they went on to win 19–12.

The next games in this event will be scheduled for the weekend of 12th and 13th February.

The games in the Mixed Pairs Championship that were unable to be played last Saturday will now be played on or before Saturday 5th February.

Male players who would like to be considered for selection in the South Western District side for the Bing Wallder Shield should ensure their name is on the sheet this week.

Any players who want to purchase one of the club’s new bowls shirts should check the sheet on the notice board.

The next series of the Guy Pickering Charity Challenge will commence on Wednesday 9th February. There will also be games on Thursday 10th February. Teams should register by calling the Bowling Club or the Services Club or by contacting Ian Schofield or Cliff Traynor.

The next date for Sunday Funday Bowls is 20th February and an entry form is on the notice board.
