The club conducted preliminary rounds of the Zone 8 Pairs Championships for 2023-24 over the weekend. Despite the light overnight showers on Friday night, and some cool breeze on both days, the games were played in quite good conditions.

There was just one game on Saturday afternoon with Joe Read and Albert Carter playing Larry Stitt and Ray Claffey from Tumut in Section 1 of the Open Reserve division. Larry and Ray established an early lead and they went on to win the game 20–10.

Larry and Ray started well on Sunday morning against Michael Webb and Glen Benson and led 13–4 after 8 ends. From that point the game changed completely with Michael and Glen dominating the scoring to win 30–14.

In the same section Joy Schroder and Amanda Shoard from Tumut played Terry McDonald and Jason Jones from Cootamundra Ex–Services. After 9 ends the scores were level at 9–all but Joy and Amanda won 5 ends in a row to lead 23–9 and went on to win 23–12.

In the final for this section Michael and Glen were level with Joy and Amanda after 8 ends with the score at 10–all. Michael and Glen did best over the remaining ends to win 27–15.

The opening games in Section 2 of this division were played on Sunday morning. In one game Steve Walsh and Les Fanning were level with Glen Seward and Tom Preston at 10–all after 10 ends. Steve and Les had some good scores on the remaining ends to win 27–14.

In the other game Brian Christie and Denis Rosen played Carl Sorgsepp and Shane Foote from Boorowa Ex–Services. Brian and Denis won the first 5 ends and then Carl and Shane won the next 5 ends for the scores to be level at 6–all. Going into the final end Carl and Shane led 13–12 but 2 shots for Brian and Denis gave them the game 14–13.

The two Young teams contested the section final on Sunday afternoon with Brian and Denis leading 11–4 after 7 ends. The score was 12–all after 12 ends and at the start of the final end Brian and Denis led 17–13. Steve and Les scored 3 shots on that end so that Brian and Denis won 17–16.

There were only three entries for the Senior division and on Sunday morning Joe Bargwanna and Cliff Traynor played Geoff Holt and Peter Watts. Joe and Cliff had an early lead but after 10 ends they were in front by just 1 shot at 9–8. Geoff and Peter were in front 16–14 after 18 ends and they won 2 of the final 3 ends to win the game 18–15.

In the afternoon’s final Geoff and Peter played John Cooper and Harold Anderson. John and Harold led 8–3 after 7 ends but Geoff and Peter then won 9 consecutive ends to lead 23–8 and they went on to win 28–10.

The State division also had just three entries and on Sunday morning two teams from Harden played each other. Craig Phillis and Matt Peisley were level with Tom Glover and Brian Madden at 9–all after 8 ends and at 17–all after 15 ends. Both teams won 3 of the final 6 ends with Tom and Brian winning 24–21. The winners for all four sections completed on Sunday afternoon have qualified for the Zone 8 Finals in November.

Local games saw 26 players on the green on Thursday afternoon in fine and warm conditions. The clear–cut winners of the vouchers for the afternoon were Aldo Malvicino and Brian Gibson with a 25 shot win.

In complete contrast there were two games where an extra end was needed to decide the winning team.
