Open-Reserve-Pairs-Winners

Zone 8 Secretary John Swaffield with Open Reserve Pairs winners Denis Rosen and Brian Christie and runners up Phil Miller and Matt Grant.

Congratulations to Brian Christie and Denis Rosen on winning the Zone 8 Open Reserve Pairs Championship played at Wagga RSL over the weekend. They had qualified for the Zone Finals by winning their section of this event in August.

The quarter–final games on Saturday morning saw M Rinehart and Wayne Stimson (Temora B&R) defeat Andre De Haan and Gavin Stephenson (Coolamon) 19–17, Brian and Denis defeat Terry Sellars and Nick Williams (Wagga RSL) 17–12 and Matt Grant and Phil Miller (Narrandera) defeat Bryan Gee and Ron Bonat (Oaklands) 15–12 with Michael Webb and Glen Benson having a bye.

On Sunday morning Brian and Denis defeated Rinehart and Stimson 19–9 and Grant and Miller scored 1 shot on the final end of their game to defeat Michael and Glen 15–14.

Brian and Denis continued their good form into the afternoon’s final to defeat the Narrandera team 20-8.

In winning this event Brian and Denis have qualified for the State Finals at Dubbo in March next year – a great effort.

In the Zone 8 Senior division Geoff Holt and Peter Watts won their quarter–final game against Doug Kinder and Mark Pearce (Wagga Rules) 24–12 on Saturday but lost to the eventual winners Bill Robertson and Bruce Lack (Temora B&R) 25–19 on Sunday morning. In the final Bill and Bruce defeated Richard and Peter Durnan from Narrandera 25–14.

In the final of the State division Corey Hazell and Craig Shaw (Junee) scored 1 shot on an extra end to defeat Matt McComber and Brett White (Wagga RSL) 23–22.

There was a small number of players on the green Tuesday afternoon – Melbourne Cup Day.

The players enjoyed the two games with a break in between to view the big race.

There was no play on Thursday afternoon at Young due to the rain and threat of more rain.

Unfortunately, the decision to not play the Guy Pickering games on Thursday night was proven wrong when the sun began to shine about an hour after the decision was made.

There were 18 players involved on Saturday afternoon in quite warm conditions.

In a game of triples Tony Oyston, Ted Loader and Colin Chapman won their game by 13 shots.

In the pairs games Scott Douglas and John Cooper scored 1 shot on an extra end to win their game, Albert Carter and Les Fanning had a winning margin of 7 shots and Harold Anderson and George Somerville won their game by 5 shots.

This weekend the club will host the Zone 8 Triples Finals in three divisions. The first games will be played on Saturday afternoon with two further rounds being played on Sunday.

On Wednesday 21st November the club’s annual Cherry Festival Carnival will commence with the first tournament being the Women’s Triples. The Mixed Pairs tournament will be played on Saturday and Sunday 25th and 26th and the Men’s Triples will commence on Tuesday 28th.
