Damien Miller – Winner of the District Singles Open Division.

Despite the threatening, and sometimes showery, weather, the District Singles Championships were completed over the weekend. Congratulations to the winners of the three divisions – Damien Miller in the Open event, Jim White in the Seniors and Jason Jones in the President’s Reserve for the second year in a row. The results of the first round games at Young were Harold Anderson d Cliff Traynor 31–28, John Goggin d Mike Barber 31–20, Damien Miller d Bill Luxford 31–9, Shane Foote d Craig Jordan 31–19, Ron Rosengreen d Bruce Gillies 31–20, Russell Boyd d Matt Peisley 31–30 and John Harriott d Terry Ricketts 31–13.

Saturday afternoon saw Harold Anderson defeat John Goggin 31–26, Damien Miller defeat Brian Madden 31–27, Shane Foote defeat Ron Rosengreen 31–21 and John Harriott defeat Russell Boyd 31-28. On Sunday morning in a very close semi–final, Damien Miller defeated Harold Anderson 31–28, while in the other semi–final John Harriott proved too consistent for Shane Foote to win 31–19. Damien led John 9–4 in the final before John won 9 consecutive ends to lead 14–9. Damien returned to the lead to be in front 17–15 and 20–18 before dominating the scoring in the final five ends to win 31–20.

The Senior division was played at Boorowa Ex–Services Club and in the afternoon games, Charlie Sorgsepp defeated Greg Thurtell 31–18, Peter Watts defeated Geoff Holt 31–25, John Cooper defeated Bob New 31–30 and Jim White defeated Des Grimson 31–22. Peter Watts won his semi–final against Charlie Sorgsepp 31–26 and Jim White defeated John Cooper 31–23 in the other semi–final. Jim went on to defeat Peter in the final by the narrowest of margins 31–30. In the final of the President’s Reserve, Jason Jones defeated Terry Mulligan 31–17. In earlier rounds, Jason defeated Terry Smith and Charlie Willis while Terry had wins over Steve Stanton and Geoff Manwaring.

Thanks to all the players and officials involved. In particular, thanks to Colin Powell who marked three games over the two days.

At Young on Thursday afternoon, the weather was fine and warm and there was a very good turnout of 28 men bowlers on the green. There was a run–away win in one game with Terry Holmes and Geoff Holt winning their game by 33 shots. Other winners for the afternoon were Albert Carter and Tom Preston – 11 shots, Les Fanning and Kevin Porter – 9 shots, Alan Gall and Ian Gailey – 9 shots, Brian Gibson and Peter Slater – 6 shots, Brian March and Colin Chapman – 1 shot and Kevin Bryant and Harold Anderson – 1 shot.

Tom Preston was very pleased with his resting toucher in the ditch.

This weekend will see the District Mixed Pairs played at Cootamundra Country Club on Saturday and a preliminary round of the BPL Cup played at Young on Sunday.

Last week, the six districts in Zone 8 were advised that due to the on–going COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding restrictions on clubs set by the NSW Health Department that both the President’s Cup and Bing Wallder Shield competitions have been cancelled for 2020.
