The first games in the 2023–24 Open Pennants competition saw some mixed results for the Club’s three sides.

The Grade 3 side travelled to Temora and the overall result came down to the final end of the last game to finish. With just one end to play the total shots for the two sides were tied at 56–all and fortunately the Young team scored 2 shots on that end to record an overall 58–56 win for the side.

In the individual games (skip’s names only) David Quigley lost to Bruce Lack 18–21, Brian Madden defeated Bill Spletter 27–18 and Damien Miller lost to Trevor Firman 13–17.

In Grade 5 at Boorowa Ex–Services the home side proved too strong for our side with a 67 to 55 score line. Denis Rosen defeated Kevin Anderson 24–13, Russell Boyd lost 18–19 to Chris Grimson and Glen Benson lost to Shane Foote 13–35.

Playing at home Young’s Grade 7 side proved too strong for Boorowa Ex–Services to win all three rinks for an overall score of 85 to 45. Tony Ruhl defeated Carl Sorgsepp 26–13, Joe Bargwanna defeated Anthony Dymock 28–15 and Colin Stokell defeated Bill Luxford 31–17. Thanks to Colin Chapman, Phillip Hewson and Vic Brown for their work on the barbecue. The selectors have left the sides unchanged for Round 2 and all players will be advised of the starting times once they have been confirmed.

During the week there were 16 players on Thursday afternoon and there were some big winning margins. Harold Anderson and Glen Seward won their game by 19 shots, Tom Preston and Austin Cramton’s margin was 17 shots, Phil Taylor and Col Chapman won by 13 shots and Allan Langford and Cliff Traynor won by 1 shot.

Jackpot Bowls on Saturday saw just 14 players taking part. No doubt some of the regular participants were saving their efforts for Sunday Pennants. The vouchers for the afternoon went to Albert Carter and Colin Chapman.

The other two winning teams were Aldo Malvicino and Jono Watson and Michael Webb, Mark Anderson and Peter Watts.

The first games in the current session of the Guy Pickering Charity Challenge were played during the week. There were approximately 40 players on the greens on both Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Good luck to the club’s three Pennant sides who will be playing on Sunday. The Grade 3 side travels to Tumut, Grade 5 will play at Cootamundra Ex–Services and the Grade 7 side will play Harden at Young.

The first games in the Club Singles will be played this week with a number of games scheduled to be completed no later than Saturday. There will be some games played during the week, some on Saturday morning and some on Saturday afternoon.

Scheduled games include Jono Watson v John Cooper, Russell Boyd v Denis Rosen, Colin Stokell v Joe Read, George Somerville v Ian Schofield, Peter Watts v Darryle Miller, Harold Anderson v Brian Christie, Glen Seward v Geoff Holt and Damien Miller v Glen Benson.

Further games in this event will be played next week.
