Bowls

Despite the very unusual conditions over the weekend, the two tournaments set down were completed successfully. Thanks to the players involved for their patience on Saturday.

There were 16 teams of pairs involved on both days. On Saturday, the early morning drizzle stopped to allow play to commence just a few minutes late, but much heavier rain came partway through the second game and play was stopped and an earlier lunch was taken.

During lunch, the greens looked more like lakes, but after the rain stopped play was restarted, the second game was completed and the third game commenced. The really heavy rain started during game three with all games more than half–way through. Once again, the greens were submerged and play was abandoned.

Results were decided on the two completed games and the scores after 10 ends of the third game. Harden players John Harriott and Shane Foote were the winners with 3 wins and a margin of 40 shots. In second place were John and Kate Cooper with 3 wins and a margin of 33 shots and after a countback, Ray Axam and Warren Turner from Albion Park were third with the same score. Max Penfold and Vic Brown were fourth with 3 wins and a margin of 6 shots.

Three games of Three–Bowl Pairs were completed without interruption on Sunday in very cold and windy conditions. Peter Watts and Warren Turner were the winners with 3 wins and a margin of 28 shots. Jill and Denis Rosen were in second place with 3 wins and a margin of 6 shots. Two wins and a draw gave Therese Ruhl and Martin Betcher third place and John Harriott and Shane Foote were fourth with 2 wins and a margin of 26 shots.

Prizes for game winners went to Graeme Dennis and Terry Smith, John and Kate Cooper, and Sheila and Cliff Traynor.

The Club would like to thank the tournament sponsors – Young Services Club, Young Bowling Asian Restaurant and Momentum for Women Gym.

Thanks to Damien Miller and Margo Parker for their organisation. Thanks and well done to the bar staff and the caterer.

Thursday afternoon saw 22 players on the green. The winning teams were Albert Carter and Joe Bargwanna (17 shots), Milan Brankovic and Ian Schofield (14 shots), Brian Christie and Brian March (13 shots), Wally Chater and Tom Preston (6 shots) and Aldo Malvicino, Phil Taylor and Ian Gailey (5 shots).

Play in the Guy Pickering Charity Challenge on Tuesday and Thursday saw a total of 80 players involved over the two nights. The winners for the Tuesday night division were The Bandits after a countback with EFL, with both teams finishing with a score of 14 points.

There were clear-cut winners on Thursday night when FATBBOTS scored a runaway win and 17 points.

Entries have been called for the Minor Singles, Minor Pairs and Mixed Pairs Championships. Please read the details on the notice board.

Good luck to Damien Miller who will be participating in the Zone 8 Singles Championship this weekend at Ariah Park.

At this time of the year there are usually local social groups and businesses booking for end-of-year bowls afternoons or evenings at the Club. The Club is currently working through the changing health restrictions to determine the procedures that need to be applied to each individual booking.
