What a roller coaster of ups and downs the RDA’s 40th year has been, with COVID-19 still lurking, rain and more rain, and the passing of a volunteer and a participant.

Long-time participant, Tiffany was a very talented carriage driver and a State driving competition winner who tragically lost her life in a car accident this year.

An Encouragement Award trophy has been instigated in her memory.

The group also mourned the passing of “Stoney” who volunteered with carriage driving.

Juliet McFarlane said carriage driving continued to be a major part of RDA’s program allowing those who couldn’t ride to take part. “We have seen an increase in participation of adults and those using wheelchairs,” Ms McFarlane said.

“Riding and carriage driving commenced in second term with 73 participants registered.”

“All four schools plus adults from the local disability service again attending bring a number of first-time participants.”

The Shetland ponies have enjoyed an easy year this year, with most riders needing a bigger pony or horse.

“Our wonderful horse, Phoenix has retired home to his family,” Ms McFarlane said.

“Our herd is now 13. Like every Centre, we keep watch for that elusive “bombproof” horse or pony.”

“Carriage horse, Rumpy celebrated his 21st birthday along with other horses with a party and special cards made by the participants.”

“While everyone enjoyed party treats, the horses shared their carrots and chaff birthday cake.”

The RDA Centre would like to thank Cherry Festival Charity Queen entrant Kim for selecting them as her chosen charity.

“She worked tirelessly to fundraise and promote the Centre’s program culminating in a wonderful donation of $4,687.91,” Ms McFarlane said.

“Once again, the local community has given whole-hearted support with substantial donations from the S&C Club, Lions Club, the Anglican Op Shop, Riverina Stockfeeds, IGA and Bunnings with many contributions to the Golf Day.”

“Everything was in place for our Golf Day, then down came the rain closing the course.”

“Maybe 2023 will be the third time lucky.”

Young’s two coaches, one coach/whip, two whips and one trainee whip all took opportunities to attend risk management and conflict resolution seminars, a saddle-fitting clinic, a carriage driving competition and a heavy harness horse weekend.

The Centre entered a very popular float, prepared by volunteers, in the Cherry Festival Street Parade, showcasing their programs.

Volunteer numbers remained steady for 2023, at around 24 with some new faces joining, including two high school students.

The Centre supported the Young Pony Club, who allows them to use a small area for RDA sessions, securing funding to erect a roof.

RDA also completed the electrification of the new boundary fence for the horse paddocks.

The barbecue trailer received from State Office is currently undergoing refurbishment for future fundraising activities.

The year ended with a visit from Santa with his sack of gifts.

He arrived in a small sleigh led by “Freddie” to the delight and astonishment of the children.

Freddie belongs to local vet, Jantein who looks after the Centre’s horses.
