The Young Combined Hockey Association’s Winter Competition burst into action on Sunday with an exhilarating double-header that showcased both seasoned players and an exciting influx of fresh talent.

Under a clear, sunny sky, the season’s opening match saw the Redbacks face off against the Penguins in a fast-paced and tightly contested encounter.

The Penguins came out firing, dominating early possession and pressing hard in attack. The forward trio of Izack Meharg, Monique Woodward, and Shaun Mortyne worked seamlessly to challenge the Redbacks’ defence from the opening whistle.

Despite the early pressure, it was the Redbacks who struck first. Zac Williams made no mistake with a powerful shot, finding the back of the net and giving the Redbacks a 1–0 lead at quarter-time.

In the second quarter, the Penguins regrouped and tightened their defence.

Joshua Dunk and Jose Webber held firm at the back, while Edwin Kwan delivered a standout performance in goals, pulling off a series of crucial saves to keep the Penguins in the contest.

Their efforts paid off when Monique Woodward capitalised on a well-executed attack to score the equaliser, sending the teams into halftime level at 1–1.

The second half saw the Redbacks lift their intensity. Sarah Wills and Emily

O’Brien were instrumental in shutting down further advances from the Penguins, while Cathrine Gordon and Luke Cosgrove linked up effectively to transition the ball into attack. Although Tom Wills narrowly missed an opportunity to reclaim the lead, teammate Edwina Planten was quick to react, trapping the missed shot and tapping the ball in to put the Redbacks back in front.

But the Redbacks weren’t done. A penalty stroke awarded in the third quarter gave them a golden chance to extend their lead. Luke Cosgrove stepped up to take the shot, only to be denied by an incredible diving save from Edwin Kwan—one of the game’s standout moments.

However, the Redbacks maintained the pressure, and moments later, Cosgrove found redemption with a swift goal, bringing the score to 3–1 by the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter remained a tough challenge, with both teams continuing to press forward and make attempts at goal.

Defensive lines were tested, and the pace of the game never slowed.

Ultimately, it was Luke Cosgrove once again who broke through, adding a final goal to seal the match. The final whistle blew with the Redbacks taking a convincing 4–1 victory.

The second game of the afternoon saw the Vikings take on DTS in a quick-paced contest, full of action and numerous short

corners. It was a well-matched encounter, with both teams working tirelessly in search of a win.

The Vikings’ defensive players were the backbone of their side, with Thomas Pickering, William Byrnes, Kerri Palmer, and Paul Robertson combining effectively to shut down DTS’s advances.

Behind them, Adam Gunderson put in a solid performance in goal, holding firm against multiple DTS attacks.

DTS proved relentless, particularly through Charlie Bielefeld, who drove their attacking efforts, and Melissa Wark, who frequently found herself in dangerous positions.

At the other end, DTS’s defence was just as strong, with Greg Bannister, Fiona Douglas, and Michael Skillen making it difficult for the Vikings to create scoring opportunities. David and Matthew Hall added pressure in the midfield, while Oscar Heffernan stood tall in goals, denying several Viking attempts.

The first half ended locked at 0–0, a testament to the strength and determination of both sides. In the third quarter, DTS stepped up the pressure, dominating possession and forcing the Vikings into a defensive mindset.

Their persistence paid off during one of many short corners, as Michael Skillen connected cleanly with the ball, sending it past the defence and into the net for a 1–0 lead at the final break.

The fourth quarter saw the Vikings push back, taking opportunities to advance on the DTS goal, but they were unable to capitalise on their efforts, leaving the final score at 1–0 to DTS.

With two competitive matches setting the tone, the opening day of the Winter Competition delivered excitement, skill, and a glimpse of what promises to be a thrilling season ahead.
