Harden residents Lauris Elms, AM OBE, 93 years old, who was also an opera singer, her husband and their daughter Deborah de Graaff with performers Amelia Farrugia and John Martin.

The ‘Stars and Song’ recital, the latest concert for Silo Sounds was held recently on a cool autumn afternoon.

Over 100 people attended Ross Memorial Church to hear soprano Amelia Farrugia with John Martin on piano.

Amelia speaks French fluently as she spent much of her early life in France.

Chairperson of Silo Sounds Inc Stewart Bruce commented, “You could tell that Amelia loved presenting her selection of French songs in her first bracket.”

“Amelia chose works by Hahn, Debussy and Delibes to entrance the enthusiastic audience.”

“Amelia’s magnificent operatic-trained voice reached some amazing high notes that filled and reverberated throughout the Ross Memorial Church. There was no need for a microphone (other than for the excellent commentary provided by both artists).”

“John Martin is a super musician who turned his hand to accompanying and then delighted the audience with renditions of two Impromptus by Frederic Chopin.”

“However, there was nothing “impromptu” about these items which were execut

ed flawlessly by a consummate pianist.”

The program finished with ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘I Could Have Dance All Night’ from My Fair Lady.

The signature delicious high tea was served following the recital, with Amelia and John chatting to attendees.

Amelia and John stayed in Harden overnight, completing three mentoring workshops for Bunyip Preschool and Murrumburrah Public School, as well as an elders concert in the church hall.

Attention now turns to the next Silo Sounds recital, set down for Sunday the 6th of July. This recital will feature the Estivo Trio - piano, cello and violin.

“This will be a wonderful event to keep you warm on a winter’s afternoon,” said Stewart.
