Round 4 of the winter hockey competition delivered a thrilling display of skill and intensity, featuring standout goals and one fiercely contested match that ended in a rare scoreless draw — a testament to both teams’ unwavering defense.

The opening game saw the Redbacks face off against the Penguins, two sides with a history of tough, physical encounters. This match proved no different, with both teams pushing hard early but struggling to break through each other’s disciplined defensive lines.

Redbacks goalkeeper Conan Scott had a standout performance, putting his body on the line to deny the Penguins time and again. It was no easy task, with the Penguins’ attacking trio — Monique Woodward, Joshua Dunk, and Jennifer McKay — applying relentless pressure throughout the first half.

The Penguins’ defense was equally impressive, holding strong to keep the Redbacks scoreless by halftime, with the scoreboard reading 0–0 at the break.

The momentum shifted in the third quarter when Tom Wills opened the scoring for the Redbacks with a thunderous strike into the goal. Moments later, Luke Cosgrove converted a short corner with a precise shot past the Penguins’ keeper, doubling the lead.

But the Redbacks weren’t done yet. Later in the third quarter, Cosgrove fired a ball across the face of goal where Edwina Planten was perfectly positioned to collect and flick it in, pushing the margin to 3–0.

The Penguins found some rhythm again in the final quarter, with Elijah Meharg and Izack Meharg continuing to challenge the Redbacks’ defense. However, it was the Redbacks who struck again — Catherine Gordon capitalized on a loose ball to slot home their fourth and final goal.

Dodee Ryan also impressed for the Redbacks, contributing strongly to the team’s attacking plays and keeping up the pressure until the final whistle.

The final score: Redbacks 4, Penguins 0 — a convincing win that highlights the Redbacks’ growing form this season.

The second game of the day was a gripping top-of-the-table showdown, the undefeated DTS and the second-placed Vikings

went head-to-head in the second game of the afternoon — a match that lived up to its billing as a fiercely contested arm wrestle from the opening whistle.

Both teams showcased their attacking flair early, driving the ball forward and creating multiple scoring chances. Brendan Sheppard was a standout for the Vikings, applying relentless pressure on the DTS defence and setting up several key opportunities.

Midfielders Tracy Lamb and Paul Robertson also played pivotal roles, linking play and keeping the pressure on.

DTS responded with sharp passing and composed movement, with David Hall and Charlie Bielfield leading the charge through the midfield. However, they were repeatedly thwarted by a resolute Vikings backline that refused to be broken.

The Vikings dominated possession and earned numerous short corners, but were unable to convert thanks to a rock-solid DTS defence marshalled by James Cronin and Andrew Austen. Despite the pressure, DTS held firm, keeping their clean sheet intact.

Equally impressive was the Vikings’ defensive discipline, as they denied DTS a single penalty corner and prevented them from finding the net. Kerri Palmer was a standout performer, contributing heavily at both ends of the field and seemingly covering every blade of grass.

In the end, despite the intensity and quality on display, neither side could find a breakthrough. The game finished in a hard-fought 0–0 draw — a result that keeps DTS’ unbeaten record intact and confirms both sides as serious contenders in the competition.
