John Niven has been a Councillor in Weddin for 17 years and has nominated in Hilltops for the upcoming election.

He believes the Council needs the support of the community and the only way to achieve that is through transparency and accountability.

“Weddin Shire received overwhelming support for a special rate variation to help fund the Grenfell Medical Centre and swimming pool. I’m not an accountant and rely on arithmetic. Perhaps the big numbers on Hilltops balance sheet are not all debt, however it seems the reserves are approximately $7 million short of cash. This will have to be fixed before we embark on fancy goals that make everybody feel good,” said John.

“I’ll be a true independent. I’ve had little or no dealings with other candidates and it’s only natural that I’ll have more in common with some than others. There’ll be no pacts like ‘you vote for this, I will vote for that.’ De-merging is not an option. Merger didn’t solve the fundamental problems but we have to get on with it.”

“There are many challenges such as developing industrial areas, Boorowa water supply, heavy vehicle by-pass for Young, tourism etc. We need old fashioned, practical, affordable solutions that enable business to prosper.”
