Jude Sibanda - Kookaburras

Round 8 of the Spring Hockey Twilight competition marked the close of a fantastic season in Young, with five teams taking to the field one last time.

The atmosphere was filled with good cheer, camaraderie, and sportsmanship as players and supporters celebrated the end of the 2025 season.

The opening match saw the Kookaburras face off against the Emus in a five-a-side contest that allowed plenty of space for fast ball movement.

After a cautious start, Joshua Sibanda opened the scoring for the Kookaburras.

The Emus quickly hit back, with Izack Meharg working the ball up the sideline before crossing to Haine Braddon, who slotted home their first goal.

Greg Bannister added another with a solo run, putting the Emus ahead.

The Kookaburras responded with a flurry of goals from Joshua, Jude, Nothabo, and Hannington Sibanda, along with Dodee Ryan, establishing a commanding lead.

Despite late efforts from Elijah Meharg and Michael Adams, the Emus couldn’t close the gap, and the Kookaburras claimed victory 8–4.

The second game was scheduled between the Koalas and Possums.

With the Koalas short on numbers, they forfeited, but a spirited social match still went ahead thanks to the Possums lending players.

The contest was played in great fun, showcasing skill and flair.

Ruby Walsh impressed on the wing, linking well with Michael Walsh to break through the Koalas’ defence.

Ruby Walsh capitalised in the circle to put the Possums on the board, while Annie Starr and James Read added strength in attack and defence.

The Koalas fought hard, with Natasha Reynolds finding her rhythm and Kylan Williamson-Bellingham scoring.

Michelle Cronin starred in defence with a crucial save before adding a goal herself.

Ally Read worked tirelessly for the Possums, also scoring, but Brendan Sheppard and Edwina Planten sealed a 4–2 win for the Koalas.

The final game pitted the Wombats against the Emus, who again took the field short but showed remarkable energy.

Fred Dimmick stood firm in defence for the Wombats, while Jose Webber and Janice Dunk drove play forward.

Yet the pace and youth of the Emus proved decisive, with Izack Meharg scoring twice and Elijah Meharg adding another to secure a 3–0 win.

With Round 8 complete, the 2025 Twilight Hockey season came to a close.

Organisers thanked all players and supporters for their enthusiasm and commitment, and look forward to welcoming both new and returning members for another exciting season in 2026.

Congratulations to the Kookaburras who finished on top of the ladder and walked away champions. 96A4862IMAGE: Dodee Ryan and Jasper Meharg (Kookaburra vs Emus).
