Last Friday, August 18 saw residents converge on Anderson Park for the 50th Anniversary of Vietnam Veterans Day.

Wreaths were laid in honour of the 43 men from Young who went to Vietnam.

Those men are listed on a plaque (42 names) and an addendum plaque (one name).

August 18 was chosen as Vietnam Veterans Day, or Long Tan Day as it was originally named, to commemorate the men of Company D, 6ARAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan on August 18, 1966.

This year’s event was organised by the RSL Sub-branch Young that honours veterans who have served in all wars, supporting each other and taking care of family members left behind by those who gave their lives in service to our country so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have come to take for granted.

Remember to purchase a badge the next time the RSL Sub-branches are doing the rounds selling badges because all proceeds go to the veterans living in our communities.
