The Young Division 4 Pennant side travelled to Belmont last Thursday to play in the State Pennant Finals. Their games were played at the Valentine Bowling Club.

The teams were Judith Mulligan, Sheila Traynor, Robyn Apps, Elsie Hines and Sonia Ingall, Therese Ruhl, Kathryn Betcher, Kate Cooper.

On Friday their first match was against Cabarita Beach. The result for this was a win for Elsie’s team 23-11 and Kate’s team 20-19 giving a total of Young 43 shots to Cabarita 30.

The afternoon game was against Belmont and the results were Elsie 29-18 and Kate 25-23 giving Young a total of 54 shots to Belmont’s 41 shots.

On the Saturday morning they played their third sectional match against Seaforth. The result here was a win to Elsie’s team 20-11 but unfortunately Kate’s team lost 10-18.

However, the total result for the 42 ends was Young 30 to Seaforth 29. This meant Young had won all three games in their section.

As the only team to do so this made them outright winners of their section and qualified them to play in the quarter-finals.

Young played a side from Austral in the quarter finals.

Young started off strongly and both teams were holding the lead for most of the game, but it was the last end that cost them.

Elsie’s team had one bowl close to the jack and Austral had three. They needed these 3 shots to give them a win. They managed to take out Young’s bowl and Young couldn’t get their last bowl close enough so they were beaten by one shot – 19 to 20.

A similar thing happened for Kate’s team and they too lost by one shot, 18-19. The final score was Young 37– Austral 39.

Austral then went on to play Narrabri in the semi-final and won that match 42-38.

They then played Bourke in the final and won that 50-26 to take out the Division 4 Pennants title.

The Young players are quite proud that they came so close to defeating the eventual winners.

The players would like to thank Terry Mulligan for his time and effort as manager of the side.

In other bowls news three teams played in the Jenny Ricketts Memorial Day held at Harden on November 12th. It was a great day and quite successful for Young.

The team of Judith Mulligan, Heather Bailey and Margaret Gailey came second and the team of Lisa Boyd, Carol O’Neal and Elsie Hines came third.

The Cherry Festival Carnival started this week.

On Wednesday and Thursday the ladies played a Triples Tournament and over the weekend the Mixed Pairs Tournament will be played with 42 teams taking part.

Next week the Men’s Triples event will be held.
