On 21st May 1921, a meeting was held in the School of Arts for the purpose of establishing a bowling club in Young.

This week the Young Bowling Club is celebrating the centenary of its formation with a week of bowls events and a centenary dinner on Saturday 22nd May.

The initial site selected for the Club was the current site in Lachlan Street and the land had to be cleared of trees and weeds, with care taken around the old mining shafts before a green could be constructed.

The official opening of the green was on 14th June 1922 with a match against bowlers from Grenfell.

In September 1922 it was decided to erect a pavilion and to include electric light installation on the green and in November 1922 a tender of £212/10/0 for this work was accepted.

A fire on 30th December 1944 destroyed the clubhouse and practically all its contents and it was not until 1947 that a replacement was completed. Many additions and alterations have been made since then.

This week’s celebrations include four separate bowls events with Women’s Pairs on Monday 17th, Open Pairs on Tuesday 18th, Men’s Pairs on Wednesday and Thursday 19th and 20th and Open Triples on Saturday 22nd.

The club will be honoured to have a number of special guests at the centenary dinner.

Acceptances have been received from Mr Bob Boorman (President of Bowls Australia), Mr Neil Dalrymple (CEO of Bowls Australia), Mr Vince Beard (Immediate Past President of Bowls NSW) and Mrs Pam Andrich (President of Women’s Bowls NSW).

The guest speaker for the night will be Mr Mark Casey.

He represented Australia for 13 years and won a number of world and Commonwealth titles during that time. These included World Singles Champion in 2005, the gold medal for Commonwealth Games Men’s Triples in 2006 and the silver medal in this event in 2010.

In 2016, Mark was appointed Events and Competition Manager for Bowls Australia and in 2019 was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to bowls.
