Young Locals Rally for Change at First-Ever Vinnies Community Sleepout

The Young community is coming together in a powerful new way this winter, as Vinnies launches its very first Community Sleepout—an event aimed at raising both awareness and funds for locals doing it tough.
Replacing the previous CEO-only version of the fundraiser, this year’s event opens the doors to everyone—inviting individuals, families, friends, businesses, and community groups to spend one night sleeping out in solidarity with those experiencing homelessness.
It’s not about replicating what it’s like to sleep rough. Rather, it’s a chance to come together, reflect, and support the people in our region who are facing real and growing hardship.
Held on the verandah at Vinnies Young (120 Lovell Street) from 6pm Thursday 28 August to 6am the next morning, the Community Sleepout asks participants to give up their beds for one night and, in doing so, raise much-needed funds.
The goal is to raise $60,000—and every dollar stays local, helping people right here in the Western Region access food, support services, crisis accommodation, and emergency relief.
From pantry staples and ready-to-eat meals, to case management and emergency swags, the funds will go directly toward frontline help for those most in need.
“Hardship in our community wears many faces,” said Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn CEO Lucy Hohnen. “It’s the young person couch-surfing, the pensioner sleeping in a car, the single parent choosing between rent and food. This crisis is growing, and it’s happening right here.”
In the past 12 months alone, Vinnies volunteers have delivered more than 7,000 instances of support in the region—highlighting just how vital this event and its fundraising efforts are.
The beauty of the Community Sleepout lies in its simplicity: bring your sleeping bag, register online, and raise what you can. And if sleeping out isn’t possible, donations are still warmly welcomed.
Vinnies encourages anyone who cares about community to get involved—whether as a participant, donor, or advocate. Every small act of kindness contributes to a larger impact.
