Young Riding for the Disabled End of Year Report

Written by: The Hilltops Phoenix

RDA Carousel.

An enjoyable event to mark the end of a difficult year for the Young Riding for the Disabled (RDA) was recently held at Golden Glance Nursery. Volunteers and riders who have been unable to meet due to COVID-19, gathered at the Nursery for morning tea under the shade of one of the many trees in the garden. The nursery, which is run by the Sullivan family, is a delight for both children and adults with its many paths, different levels, brightly coloured flowers, playground equipment, an aviary and a lovely old-fashioned functioning carousel. The carousel proved to be popular for the children who came from Young public schools and also from Forbes. Each child was presented with a small pot plant to take home and nurture.

In this year of limited fundraising, RDA has been blessed to have been supported by many generous people and organisations in order to keep horses fed, shod and in general good health, as well as covering normal operating costs. RDA acknowledges and thanks Young Services and Citizens Club, the Temora Trotting Club, IGA Community Chest, St John’s Anglican Church, South West Slopes Credit Union, the Family of Gwen Briggs, Twomey & Twomey, Wombat Hotel Social Group, Westpac Bank, CBA NSW and Essential Energy. A huge thank you also to Mick Roberts who donated a precious and much appreciated 100 bales of hay. This is the best Christmas “pudding” ever for the horses!

RDA keeps some horses and ponies on a block of land on Telegraph Road. An anonymous very kind person has been mowing the verge along this road which is a huge help to us, as it reduces the fire risk and stops the horses reaching over the fence to eat potential long grass. Thank you so much for this generous act.

We all hope that COVID continues to be kept at bay and RDA can resume next year. The organisation, including the horses, is looking forward to seeing old faces and welcoming some new ones in 2021. The volunteers wish all a merry Christmas and a trouble free 2021.
