President’s Day was celebrated at the Young Bowling Club Tuesday 27th August. Participating clubs from the district included Harden, Cootamundra Country Club, Cootamundra Ex Services, Boorowa Ex Services Club and Grenfell, as well as teams from Young.

Three clubs from outside our district joined us as well. It was great that Forbes, West Wyalong and Temora Recreation Clubs made the effort. All up there were 42 bowlers on the green playing Triples.

President Heather Bailey said, “It was wonderful to see so much colour and motion on a full green. The green ran very well thanks to greenkeeper Damien Miller, who does an excellent job.”

After the game, players enjoyed a lovely lunch made by the Club’s Asian restaurant.

Speeches were made by South West President Robyn Apps, as well as Young’s President Heather. Heather thanked her Club members for their support and efforts in making sure her special day was a success. She also made mention of special guests and life members, Dorothy Shepherd and Betty Powderly, as well as Mary Frost, Nancy Tomlinson and Honor Stollery.

The Match Committee presented prizes to winners with bowls closest to the spider and President’s bowls plus resting touchers. The winning team on the day with a margin of 13 was one of the Young teams consisting of Robyn Tierney, Pat Reid and Margaret Gailey.

Runners up were Ann Larson, Judith Mulligan and Robyn Apps who made up the South West team. Heather thanked Poppa’s Fudge Factory and Judith Mulligan from Lockwood Wines for donating the raffle prizes. Once again, a truly lovely day.

The semi-final of the ladies Club Triples Championship was played last Thursday 29th August. Judith Mulligan, Heather Bailey and Margaret Gailey defeated Zita Farrell, Robyn Tierney and Lee Veitch with a close finish of 25/21. Margaret’s team at one stage was leading 22/9 but Lee’s team put much effort into their play to put pressure on the leading team. Hence the result. The other 2 teams fighting it out in the semis were Margaret Glasheen, Judy Watson and Sheila Traynor who went down to Jill Rosen, Ann Gardner and Julie Alavoine 16/22. Julie’s team won the Club vouchers with the biggest margin. Julie’s team will now play against Margaret’s team in the final at a date to be fixed.

The Open Fours team from Young are wished the very best of luck when they compete at State Championships in Tamworth this week. Mary Bennett, Jill Rosen, Therese Ruhl and Kate Cooper will no doubt enjoy the atmosphere and experience.

Best wishes to Damien Miller and Margo Parker from the Young Club who are also heading to Tamworth to complete in the Mixed Pairs event. A great effort from the Young Club.
