Boorowa Central School celebrated 155 years over the weekend with a variety of events including an open school, the ribbon cutting of the Commemoration Wall and a gala dinner.
The celebrations began with an open school where visitors had the opportunity to tour the school, stepping into classrooms to interact with staff and students.
“Visitors were also encouraged to share a memory or two at our 6 heritage stops along the way,” Principal Graham Jones said.
“The most popular destination was our memorabilia display in the Library. It included photos by decade as far back at the 1910’s as well as artifacts, trophies, old equipment and more.”
Coffee and freshly baked scones were served by Year 11 hospitality students and a BBQ was served by volunteers.
Following the tour, visitors were invited to the hall for a special presentation. An estimated 600 guests attended the presentation hosted by secondary school captains Emma Craig and Jenna Bush.
Speakers included Principal Graham Jones, ex-teacher Deb Valencic, ex-student Christopher Grimson and current primary captains Eddie Wines and Joe Reid. Oldest living ex-students Ruth Small and Gloria Glover and current youngest student Aria Barton cut the celebration cake together with a special engraved knife that was donated by the school’s Student Representative Council.
The presentation concluded with the ribbon cutting of the Commemoration Wall. The Commemoration Wall was constructed with 400 personalised bricks bought by families. 350 people attended the gala dinner at the Boorowa Ex-Services Club, enjoying canapes, a speech from Principal Graham Jones and a celebration cake before socialising the night away.
The celebrations concluded with a final catch up for attendees with a BBQ in the Boorowa Recreation Park.
A new time capsule filled with photos and items from the event and contributions from each year group and the 155 organising committee will be buried at the base of the Commemoration Wall. It will be exhumed at the 175 year celebration in 2045.
“The 155 Years of Boorowa Central School was a huge success. I received many congratulations throughout the weekend and had the pleasure of meeting many ex-students and staff members.”
“On behalf of Boorowa Central School, I would like to thank all who contributed to the celebrations and those who attended on the day,” said Principal Jones.
