Recently, the United Hospital Auxiliaries (UHA) hosted their annual event, The NSW Regional Conference, held at Tumut. Young’s Dorothy Shepherd was awarded NSW UHA Life Membership.

This is the greatest honour a member of the UHA can bestow. The award was presented by Dr Joe McGirr MP, Member for Wagga supported by NSW State President Linda Swales.Mary Brown of Tumut was also awarded Life Membership.

Five other members of Young Auxiliary, including her daughter Judith Hall, were also able to attend to celebrate the occasion.

Dorothy has been a member of the Young Hospital Auxiliary for 30 years. At 94 years of age, she is presently treasurer, a position she has held since 2011. Quotes from her citation included: “Her keeping of books and reports is impeccable; her dedication, loyalty, and knowledge of procedures and policies is outstanding.”

The citation also includes quotes from the nomination: “Dorothy is an inspiration to all members, no nonsense and quick to make a point - quietly going about her work but encouraging all members to do their best.”

Congratulations Dorothy. You join a small group of other Young Auxiliary members who have been awarded UHA NSW Life Membership - Caroline Marshall in 1959, Pru Lindsay in 1996, and Chris Page in 2016. What an inspiration they have all been. The UHA was formed in 1933, and through local branches, have been responding to the needs of community health facilities throughout NSW.

There are 190 branches across 12 regions of NSW, who raise funds autonomously for their local Health Service for the benefit of patient comfort and care. Amongst the objectives of the charity is to assist the welfare of patients and staff at all hospitals and health care centres by providing all kinds of services to those hospitals and to assist in fundraising.

Fundraising includes donation, fetes, cafes, gift shops and kiosks, raffles, street stalls, bingo, book fairs and a range of other events and facilities. All the funds that are raised by the Young branch are used locally.
