IMAGE: Hours of entertainment for those that enjoy knitting, crocheting and sewing can help another less fortunate feel wrapped with love.

A group of avid knitters and crocheters meet at the Young Club every Wednesday from 10 am to 12 noon.

Apart from enjoying each other’s company, catching up over a cuppa and chat or staying for lunch, this creative crew pull out their wool and busily work their needles and hooks.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Patty Miller said they knit or crochet squares to be made into blankets.

“We knit or crochet squares that are then sewn together and sent overseas,” Patty said.

“I give them to the homeless here, or the crisis centre here, the old folks homes, Southern Cross and Mercy Care Centre - anybody who would appreciate a blanket or rug.”

The group has donated over 100 rugs this year.

Young’s yarn masters also donate their blankets to Wrap With Love, a Sydney organisation that distributes blankets to those in most need.

Each blanket made for Wrap With Love is comprised of 28 25x25 cm squares sewn together in four by 2 rows.

The size of each blanket is 100 cm by 175 cm (40 by 70 inches). It takes around 50g of 8ply wool, so the Young group welcomes donations of wool, even if it is tangled.

They will take the time to untangle it.

Some people just knit or crochet the squares, others knit and sew them together while yet others just focus on the sewing together to complete the wraps.

Wrapped With Love relies on their Australia-wide network of volunteers to have enough blankets to supply the most urgently in need with a little warmth.

If you would like to join the group, feel free to drop in at the club on Wednesdays.

Even if you’re lonely and need to get out of the house and mix with others, you are more than welcome to join. If you are keen to learn to crochet or knit, the group is happy to help with that as well.

FAST FACTS: TO DATE, WRAPPED WITH LOVE HAVE: 25,000 VOLUNTEERS; 77,371,050 HOURS OF KNITTING; 14,442,596 SQUARES KNITTED; AND 15,807 PEOPLE WRAPPED WITH LOVE.
